Big Happy Family

Posted in Nature, Photography by leahyetter on January 17, 2013

During the holidays on a trip into the hills delivering tubs and salt to the cows, Patrick glassed the hills to see if any cows were in the wrong pastures. Through the binoculars, he spotted this herd of Big Horn Sheep. I dream about these majestic creatures. I just love to watch them. It’s rare that we see a herd this large but it is mating season for them so they stay close to one another during this time.

The ewe in charge spotted me right away so I laid on my belly and stayed as still as I could.

Many ewes and lambs went down for a nap but one ram watched me for a while.

They grazed and napped…

They got sick of me after a while and got up to move to the next location.

They are so incredible to watch and even though I slithered on my belly like a snake through deer poop and cactus, it was well worth it to get a glimpse into their afternoon together as a family.

What line in the sand do you have to cross to do something like this? Just wondering.

Leah – well worth the slithering and putting up with the p…p. At least from this side of the computer 🙂 We appreciate you sharing your adventures. We are captivated and just keep staring at these beautiful, majestic (only word I can think of big enough to describe them) creatures. Good for you for grabbing all the gusto and going for it! We enjoy looking through your “eyes” and traveling through you! Seeing sights I would have never seen without you – Thanks!

In all my time in Colorado – over 30 years – I’ve NEVER seen one. And have always wanted to. Your pictures were wonderful. The third one made me think of some lunar landscape with sheep on it. And the last one was fab.

I have a friend that was traveling all through the west and her boyfriend said “all I want to see are Big Horn Sheep! That’s it!” I think they were driving in Idaho or Montana and they saw them in the hills and she turned to point them out and he was asleep! He still hasn’t seen them. 🙂

Stunning–I love the last photo. I have never seen a whole herd at once–maybe two or three at the most.

I absolutely love your blog and the shots you capture. What an interesting and very different life you lead than myself. Amazing this is in your “backyard”. Here in Indianapolis, IN a squirrel sighting is about as exciting as it gets 🙂
