Ram on a Curve
We were heading out of a ranch in the bluffs of Harrison, Nebraska when on a sharp and steep curve we came upon this two year old ram eating sunflowers right by the road.
We hung out with him for a few minutes and he was not concerned with us at all. (pardon this view)
He just stood their eating weeds and sunflowers. We were so close we could hear the crunching and smacking. It was pretty awesome.
Big Happy Family
During the holidays on a trip into the hills delivering tubs and salt to the cows, Patrick glassed the hills to see if any cows were in the wrong pastures. Through the binoculars, he spotted this herd of Big Horn Sheep. I dream about these majestic creatures. I just love to watch them. It’s rare that we see a herd this large but it is mating season for them so they stay close to one another during this time.
The ewe in charge spotted me right away so I laid on my belly and stayed as still as I could.
Many ewes and lambs went down for a nap but one ram watched me for a while.
They grazed and napped…
…and watched and listened to my shutter. Snap.Click.Snap.Click.
They got sick of me after a while and got up to move to the next location.
They are so incredible to watch and even though I slithered on my belly like a snake through deer poop and cactus, it was well worth it to get a glimpse into their afternoon together as a family.
Big Horn Sheep- the Ram
Whenever we drive highway 34, my face is glued to (or hanging out of) the window looking for big horn sheep. I’ve seen rams in the wild before, but they are always so far away. But at the Game and Fish, a few of them have a cozy home and a lot of land to roam. And I was lucky enough to capture some shots of them on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
I am so fascinated by these creatures. I could stare at them all day long. They were curious and didn’t scatter when I got close to the fence, giving us time to enjoy our little photo shoot.
Big Horn Sheep
One creature out here that I hope to get really close to one day is the big horn sheep.
Patrick spotted these guys on our drive through the canyon.
That’s a young ram(male) at the top and a ewe(female) at the bottom of the image above.
They were staring me down, taunting me to climb up there to them. I do hope to get up close someday.
But they are sheep and are most of the time too high up on the side of a mountain for my taste. I was just fortunate to have them in the sunlight here.
