Sandhill Cranes

Posted in Nature, Photography, Wildlife by leahyetter on July 18, 2011

I’ve seen the Sandhill Crane flying high above the ranch but I haven’t been able to capture them on the ground.

But one day last week, I finally saw a couple grounded and hunting.

In a neighbor’s hay meadow, they were filling up grasshoppers.

I hope they visit again. I’d like to have more time photographing them since we were rushed this particular day.
Happy Monday everyone!

I’ve only seen cranes along marshes, ponds and shorelines. So neat to see cranes in a pasture. Great pictures!

Thank you! I think they were eating more than bugs too. They were probably eating the barley and wheat. And they were huge!

Here in Michigan I have noticed the cranes often revisit fields pretty regularly. I often see them in certain fields in my daily travels. Unfortunately, they are usually too far away for good photos.

I know! I hope they come back. The move quickly and are definitely shy about the camera.
