Owl Watching

Posted in Nature, Photography by leahyetter on May 16, 2014

We had some great adventures while my folks were visiting this week. But the best part was right here at home in the meadows. In a quiet hole on the side of the bluffs nests a Great Horned Owl and her nestling. All l that we saw at first was an owl take off from the bluff and land in the trees. We saw something peeking out from the hole and thought maybe she was just nesting.

We came back a day later and set up our tripods. Once we looked through the lens, we saw a little yellow eye peeking out from under the momma.

She wasn’t wild about us being around. She’d take off but always came right back.

Just look at those fuzzy legs! The nestling hasn’t flown yet and from what we’ve read, it was probably born last month. It’s should be getting ready to spread it’s wings in the next couple of weeks.

The baby would curl up like a kitty cat when momma took off.

These images were taken over a 5 day period. This last shot was taken yesterday. He’s either fluffed up or is really growing fast.
This has been such a great week nature watching with the folks. I sure didn’t want it to end. But I promised I would keep them (and you) updated on the progress of our little baby owl. I can already see the little horned ears starting to sprout up.
I hope you enjoy these images as much as we enjoyed watching these guys. Have a great weekend!!
