Before we left our summer home in the hills, I was delighted to help Speckle the Chicken create a safe, warm and comfortable setting for her three baby chicks that were born late July.  I was out of town on a photo shoot when they were born and I was thrilled to hear from Patrick that they had hatched.

They are cute and ugly all at the same time!

Speckle is a great mom, very protective and taught them to scratch and peck from the start.

In the beginning she didn’t like me getting too close but I gained her trust when I threw food out to them. After a while she was running straight to me with the little ones in tow.

On one of my last days there, I gave them oatmeal with warm cow’s milk. They dove right in.

And got stuck.

Once they freed themselves from the sticky goodness, the worked hard to wash up.

We had a good rain after the oatmeal chow down session and they got a nice little bath and were all clean for bedtime.
It was fun watching these little ones learn and grow those last couple of weeks in the hills. Once we get settled in our new dwellings, I hope to build a coop and have a few of my own.  They are such a delight. And the eggs aren’t too shabby either!
