Leaving Yellowstone

Posted in Nature, Photography, Travel by leahyetter on June 29, 2016

As I’ve already said, we had a wonderful time in Yellowstone and I feel confident in saying that we left it just as we found it.
The only things we brought home were a couple souvenirs, maps, memories, and lots of photographs.

I don’t have the high speed equipment to get a good photograph of a black bear AND stay safe so I kept my distance when we came across this fella. I’m fine with that.

We saw beautiful waterfalls and at this spot, we met a nice gentleman with his camera on a tripod shooting in the opposite direction of this waterfall.

He pointed out a baby osprey atop a pillar of rock in the canyon waiting for it’s mom.

There is a wolf den somewhere up in those hills but we never saw a wolf up close. Obviously.

This Bison crossed the stream nervously, looking back again and again. Not sure what was after her but she seemed quite nervous.  She joined the herd after this.

One of our last stops was at the Grand Prismatic Springs…along with the rest of the tourists.

This is the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest in the world.

It’s colors match the rainbow dispersion of white light by an optical prism: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue.

A great experience was had by the three of us. I’ll admit that I had a little separation anxiety when leaving Yellowstone. We just grew to love it so much and wanted to see more. Fortunately our next stop was Grand Teton National Park. So with butterflies in our bellies, we continued on for  the adventures ahead of us!

Thanks very much for sharing your trip. The pictures are gorgeous. I was fortunate to get to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado for a day, it wasn’t enough, but I was grateful that I had the day there. I hope to visit Yellowstone in the future and your photos only make me want to go even more.

Rocky Mountain National Park is very beautiful. I was blessed with a warm, sunny Sunday early in July. Not too many people/cars and snow melt coursing down across the road in places and gorgeous views. Plenty of birds to see and hear, ground squirrels everywhere and bull elk in the water meadows near the road – yes, I got out of the car and took photos too, the elk were unimpressed, grazed or laid chewing their cud with huge velvet covered antlers. Further along the road there were cow elk bounding through grass so tall they disappeared when they were laying down. Plenty of wildflowers in the high meadows. Well worth the effort to get there. I only wish I had been able to stay longer and walk away from the paved roads. Try to go there, you’ll enjoy it. Estes Park is an interesting town to explore, it would’ve been wonderful to have more time.

This is heartbreakingly beautiful. Your eye and your skill capture the majesty and I am so glad you share it. It’s the closest I’ve come to the feeling I had decades ago waking up to the meadowlarks in the Badlands. Wow.

Great photo on the osprey chick…the red dogs are so cute this time of year (common name for buffalo calves).

Arrrgg! That reminds me about a shot I forgot to post. I guess it will get it’s own post tomorrow. I have a close-up of the red dogs I meant to share. I did not know the term red dogs for the calves. Learned something new. Thanks Deb!

I have not heard the term anywhere but Yellowstone actually. Will look forward to your red dog photos..they are always entertaining. Funny how red they are and end up so dark as adults. Have really enjoyed the photos you have shared. We skipped the park this year for a trip to Banff/Kootenay…missed it but not the crowds.
