“The Air Hurts My Face.”

Posted in Photography, Ranching, Winter by leahyetter on February 6, 2014

“Why do I live somewhere where the air hurts my face.”

A friend posted a meme on Facebook yesterday with that saying and it couldn’t be more appropriate. Our temperatures have maintained a steady below zero temp for days now. It is sooo cold. I’m not complaining because I know there are places in the world much colder but after we came in from feeding the cows, the hair that was exposed from underneath my hat was frozen. Solid. Like I could have just broken it in half. And my face hurt.

Don’t let this bull and his harem intimidate you. I’ve got something they want and they are waiting patiently for the rest of the group to join us before we spread out the cake.

We rolled out a bail and Patrick pitched out even more. There is only one pitch fork down there so I told him I’d take pictures while he pitched hay. It’s only fair. 😉

Most of the river is frozen. As always it’s tempting to skate across it but…I’m smarter than that.
I’m not sure when this extreme winter spell will break but I’ve got photo shoots and a printer workshop lined up this month. I’m very much hoping for some nicer weather in the coming weeks. Frozen fingers are crossed!

I don’t envy you being out in this, been there. Even though I miss our cows I am kinda glad with this cold we don’t have them anymore, especially with calving coming up. Stay bundled up and stay warm and keep taking these great pics!

      Thanks Bonnie!
Man oh man, it’s rough. We have been cake-ing them every other day but with this cold, we are helping them out with it every day. They look good though and their coats are thick and healthy. We calve in a month or so. I sure hope this is the worst of it this winter.

It was that cold here the other day, and I thought to myself, “I’m not in Wyo, right?” Crunchy hair is no fun.

I REALLY love that first shot – the black cows against the white snow and that straight on stare makes for a great shot.

Stay warm (if at all possible)!

Thanks Vickie! I love how wooly they are in the winter! Their coats are a good way to know how they are getting through the winter. These girls and boys are doing really well. They may be a little chilly but this cake and hay regimen is keeping them healthy. 🙂

My oh my! That is cold, sure glad you are out long enough to get frost bite. I feel for the cows. Hope you get warmer weather soon. The pictures are great, that last one is amazing…just beautiful! Hugs and stay safe and warm.

I am so sorry for the typo and glad I caught it. That should have said “sure glad you are NOT out long enough to get frost bite.

UGH! And I’ve been complaining about the 60 degree weather in Phoenix! It sure is pretty though, Leah. Lovely to look at, a pain to live through! Stay warm and stay off the river!

PS I would also LOVE the last pic, framed, to keep me feeling cool in Arizona summers! 🙂

  7. […] Will it ever end?!? I guess I can be thankful it isn’t 26 below zero. The air doesn’t hurt my face like it did last month. […]
