Crane Covered Meadow

Posted in Nature, Photography by leahyetter on November 11, 2013

Before the leaves fell and the temperature changed, our meadows were covered with Sandhill Cranes.

I think they like the meadows because we flood irrigate and it’s kind of swampy out there.

They are fun to watch when coming in for a landing. The fly above the bluffs and circle the meadow before putting their feet down in the tall grass.

They stand around chirping and calling out to one another.

I’m told that the almost extinct Whooping Crane usually flies with the Sandhill Cranes. They have headed down south for the winter but when they return I will pay closer attention and hope to spot a Whooping Crane with them.

I always wanted to drive over to Nebraska to photograph them en masse as they migrated in the spring. It’s fantastic that you got to see them!

We get a few over here because of the creek that runs through this area. Careful about letting people know that you have Whooping Cranes. The EPA will come out and say you can’t farm there anymore. They’re crazy like that. 😉

  5. […] Sandhill Cranes have started to migrate back but probably weren’t expecting the chill of Sunday morning. […]
