Bugs and Rattles

Summer is upon us. The bugs are out.
And so are the buzztails.

I shot and killed my first rattlesnake yesterday at the chicken food bowls. This was a first for me. Patrick usually kills them but I was by myself this time. I am very thankful for my neighbor who came over to chop off his head and pinch the rattle off for me as a souvenir.  Never ever thought I would say this but now that I’ve gone from city girl to country girl, I will forever carry a gun when I go out to do chores. Gotta keep the chickens, ducks, goats, and myself safe out here in the wild west!

But with the ugly comes the beauty that is Wyoming.
I’m so glad the critters and I are are safe and sound and can go back to enjoying the wild flowers and green grass. That is until the next slithering reptile comes and interrupts a perfectly fine morning.

Be safe and well my friends!

I wouldn’t say I know how to use it. Not very well at least. 🙂 I shot the house a couple times while practicing! But I’m working on it because it’s that time of year.

Good for you Leah. Always carry a gun if you can legally. Even a city girl should heed that advice. It is not the world I grew up in any more.

Thanks Wiley. While in Macon, I thought long and hard about getting one. Once I got out here, Patrick has plenty for me to choose from. 🙂

I’ll bet! That ominous rattle can freeze you in your tracks. Your hubby should be suitably impressed that you did what you had to do–without a lot of supposedly feminine, city girl dramatics!

We are not ‘allowed’ to shoot the deadly snakes we get..i admit they are beautiful but when they could kill twenty adults with one bite and thats just a 12 inch baby…hmmmmm not the nicest snakes around 🙂

The rattlesnakes aren’t pretty to me. They are dull and brown with a big fat venomous head. They make me dry-heave when I see them. They scare the crap out of me. There is no need for them to be around here. You are right, not the nicest snakes around.

Ours are pretty but absolute stone cold killers and vicious…Australia has a 15,000 dollar fine for killing a snake..you would be amazed how many ‘accidentally’ die.

It was pretty scary! I’m on point for another too. Patrick and I are convinced they smell where another snake has been and go there. But hopefully they will smell the gun powder, realize I mean business, and stay away!

Those chicken are typically Ugandan. Besides, how dangerous are rattlesnakes? aren’t you destroying nature?

Their bite can be fatal if not treated quickly. And I’m an hour away from hospital. They eat the chicken eggs and are deadly if they bite them. It’s far from destroying nature. There are plenty more out there and if they come around here again, I will shoot again. There is no need for them to be on this 80 acres when they have thousands more to slither around away from here.

Hi. Your photos and stories continue to encourage me to keep Wyoming on my travel agenda. However for a moment then I was scared to visit because of my fear on dangerous snakes. But because you explained how you can shoot them to protect you and your animals I some how feel that I too would be ok. This sounds a little silly but it’s just how I felt.

Not that chickens, ducks and goats aren’t important and all… but rattlesnakes? I just don’t know. That’s intense.
