RAIN
After Patrick spent 6 days and nights on the Arapaho fire, he came home the evening of the 4th and said that the southeast side of the fire (our immediate threat) was out. The next day we went to the Laramie Plains to check the cattle and repair a gate that the elk tore down. On our way home we saw black skies, and it wasn’t from smoke. The closer we got we could see sheets of rain falling on and around the fire. There was flash flooding and a lot of the crew still out there took cover and waited it out. And now, because the last few days have been cool and wet, the fire is 70% contained. But not before it grew to over 98,000 acres. Dryer and warmer temps are on the way but the crews will continue direct attacks on the hottest spots.
No one lost their lives and only minor injuries were reported. My heart goes out to those who lost their homes, their pasture, and their livestock. But we are so thankful that relief from above has arrived and we hope it only gets even better from here.
Thank you for all of your kind comments and prayers. We appreciate each and every one of you.
L♥ve,
Leah
So glad you are safe! xx

Thank you! It’s been stressful and I still have the house packed up ready to evacuate. Fore season isn’t over but hopefully we’ll get a break for a little while at least. 🙂

Thanks Lynne! I’ve got my wellies by the door. But since it is SO dry, the ground soaked up all that rain and we barely had any puddles. I hope I get to wear them sometime this year though!

Beautiful photo. Glad everyone seems safe despite the bleak circumstances. We’ve had temps near 100 most days and no rain in almost a month….and none in the next few weeks. I’m grateful we are spared from high winds, but the fireworks over the 4th seems ridiculous and nerve wracking! Hugs!

Thanks Melissa! Yeah, it’s just been so stressful and I’ve still got the house packed up to evacuate. Unfortunately, fire season is not over. There is a fire ban over Colorado and Wyoming and the darn thing about it is, Cheyenne, 80 miles south of us, had a fireworks show. I couldn’t believe it! I mean, didn’t the smoke tip them off that it could be dangerous.
Anyway, we’ve been the same way, super hot temps and dry air. When the wind blows, it heats us up AND dries us out. I don’t think the wind has stopped blowing since October last year. Ugh. Thanks for thinking of us my friend. Hope y’all get some relief in the weather soon.

So glad to learn that you are all well and safe. I’ve been thinking about you since your last post and wondering how you were weathering the fire. The rain was indeed a blessing.

Thankful he arrived safely. You must have been so happy Leah
I am sad so much land has been desecrated though I know new life there will soon appear it is still sickening the loss your sate and the others have had.
We here in NH were under Red Flag Warnings for about a month and with all the careless smokers and campers our tiny little state could have gone up in a flash.
Then the rains came and came some more to the point it was so green here and steamy too it was like a jungle.
I love your area and you are open and winds rage through there so I am thankful there was no human loss.
Thanks for the update.
Take care

We were so glad to see the rain on that fire. Yesterday evening we got a nice downpour for about 45 minutes. It’s not the end of dry, but it sure did help the fire danger in the immediate area around Casper, and it put some much needed water in the dirt stock tanks in our horse pasture.

The cooler temps were a relief too! But we are back to being hot and dry and on point waiting for the next one. It’s just a fact of life out here. I was hoping we’d get enough to irrigate our meadows but no such luck. I think they are saving that for the farmers.

Water rights are a huge deal in the West. If you’re at the ‘end’ of the ditch it can be pretty hit or miss from year to year. As with all agriculture, the weather has the final say. Farmers and Ranchers, must, by nature, be optimists. I know what it’s like. It’s like holding your breath all through the growing season until harvest.

Thanks Kirsten. We are back to being hot and dry with dry lightning threatening us later today. But the rain and cooler temps were nice, even if they were just fleeting. 🙂
