A Weekend of Firsts
Phew! This was a very eventful and COLD weekend. Like 10 degrees and below cold.
We got our first calf. Ironically from heifer #1, a first time mother on Saturday.
Poco’s filly started eating hay. She would eat a few bites, and then go suckle. So cute!
Yep. Those are icicles on her little ears. It’s THAT cold!
Kate and family had “no comment” and went on to find a spot to lay down.
As if we weren’t cold enough and covered in 5 inches of snow already, we woke up to a our first deep frost of the year on Sunday morning.
So we moved the cows from the pasture across the river…
…to our backyard.
Then Patrick went to feed the bulls a couple pastures over and the tractor broke down.
So we had to tow it back home. Him driving backwards in the working tractor and me steering the broken down tractor. Not easy. And not my favorite adventure thus far.
We walked into the house just before dark. I put a couple more logs on the fire, wrapped up in fleece head to toe, opened a bottle of Chianti, and enjoyed my couch and the Grammy’s.
Not always a good thing, when they ask for our help “it’s easy”!
Can’t we (you and I) just take pictures ! 🙂

Yeah really Gail, you nailed it. I was told by an old ranchers wife when I first moved out here, “Don’t learn how to do stuff around the ranch like drive the tractor. They’ll put you to work!” I’ve refused to learn but somehow this is the second time I’ve been forced into the tractor. But it is well known around here that no matter what, I will be shooting! 🙂

Thanks Nancy! I just love how the mothers are so protective and so in tune with their young. It’s such a special relationship and really awesome to witness.

Just love this lady’s blog. Who wouldn’t want to live on the ranch? I would! And the babies are cute as a button!

Great pics. Looks too cold for me. Did you have fava beans and liver with your Chianti? ; )

Ha Ken! I expected you might wonder if I had liver and fava beans. *shiver*
Yep, it was a cold couple of days but it’s warming up and melting tonight. Thanks Brother!

First these pictures are gorgeous. Some make me squeal or laugh or mutter something out loud. (:
I wondered if it was tough steering if Patrick was annoyed when you took the picture on the tractors. What an exciting and certainly hectic time for you guys.

Ha! Thanks Melissa! YES the steering was tough even when I was shooting. And Patrick is always annoyed with me. 😉 No really, we were both irritated about the whole situation. The darn thing just quit. The key doesn’t even light up the dashboard. Grrrr. Fortunately the snow has melted a lot today so we don’t have to feed for the next few days.

OK I’m wanting this. the last few posts, to be a novel I could read instead of having to wait for your next installment. It’s real time and I wonder how the colts and calves are doing right now. What’s wrong with the tractor and what’s the color of the fleece.

Hi Kenny! The colts and calf are fine, we’re waiting for more calves but they haven’t birthed yet. They probably will during the next snow storm! Don’t know what’s wrong with the tractor. There is a bale of hay on the back and we can’t get to the battery to check it. John Deer himself will have to come out and investigate. The fleece is black and purple. 🙂

Thanks Nina! Yes, it is cold but it has started to melt and is warming up a tad. But winter isn’t over yet. We have snow on the way again…and probably until May! 🙂

Never thought of cows so beautiful until now.

Ha! Thanks Sheila. They are beautiful creatures but once they have a calf on them, they are evil! They are so protective they can be dangerous.
