she’s watcha call a Catch-Colt

We had a sweet surprise yesterday afternoon. As I was replying to an email from my dear friend back east that introduced me to Wyoming, Patrick called and said “put your coat on, get on the four wheeler and come to the hillside where we walk the dogs”. I knew exactly where he was talking about so off I went.

When I arrived, I saw her. This itty bitty filly was already standing, still wet and maybe 2 hours old. And folks, this was an unplanned parenthood. About 11 months ago, the neighbors stud got in with 2 of our mares and may have bred them both. We were reassured by many that the horses weren’t cycling and more than likely weren’t bred.

But this little cutie-pie proves everyone wrong.

We gave them a couple hours and noticed that the geldings were kicking each other competing for the attention of the colt and mare. We had to get them separated to calm everyone down. It wasn’t easy but we got them corralled.

Poco 190 and her colt are in their own pin with protection from the cold and wind. Kate has a big belly so we’ll be watching her closely for the next few days. In the meantime, I’ll be having fun taking portraits of our precious little mutt.

Wow. This brings me to tears. These are beautiful pictures, Leah. I find I hold my breath when I look at the pictures…. I’m not sure why. I guess these truly leave me breathless.

Oh Lenore I know! She took my breath away the moment I saw her. Getting everyone corralled was really tough and we were so nervous she was going to get trampled. Poco has been a mom before and she really likes her baby, so she was very protective. It was good that we got them separated out to give them time to bond. The little tiny whinny from that foal is the cutest thing EVER. Not sure how Kate will do if she actually is preggers….not sure if she’s been a mom before.
      So glad you like these!!!

    Leah,

Buy yourself a baby monitor and hook one up in the barn so you can hear what’s going on with Kate ( if you have her shut up in the barn and it’s close to house) We did this when our mares were expecting and we didn’t have to run out and check quite as often! Good luck!

Good idea! But the horses are a ways away from the house and very independent. We’re checking on heifers now-a-days so just one more mom-to-be makes no difference! 🙂

Thanks Melissa! It was very hard because all of the horses think that the baby is theirs. I walked up their early this morning and they are all standing around the corral, whinnying. I guess they’ll wander off when they get hungry. The other horses had nothing to do with this baby and yet they have to be weaned off of her!

Mutt or not, beautiful baby! 🙂 I’d bet if he sheds out to mom’s color and gets her build, he’ll be a very marketable animal. Lucky you!

Wow, two surprise foals! Good thing you have room for two extra horses (at least the photos would appear to show plenty of room)!

Yes, lots of room but it’s tough to keep them warm in the winter. Colts are best born in the spring but accidents do happen!
