Remembering Mom

Posted in Family, Georgia by leahyetter on May 12, 2010
I was traveling on Mother’s Day and just haven’t had time to write.  But I didn’t want to go without a post to remember mom. She was an incredible and loving woman who was taken from us too early.  She was stricken with cancer 4 years ago and passed away 13 months after her diagnosis. Amazingly, but not surprisingly, her strength and love helped us cope. She was a mother to the very end. Below are a couple shots from the archives.

A newborn Harriet with her mom, my Mema.

A newborn Leah, with mom and brother

Me and mom goofing off during a family portrait session. This was right after the diagnosis.

Watching the stages of the cancer take the life right out of her, fighting it with all her might, made us angry. Sad. Tired. We wanted her pain to go away. And when she took her last breath, there was relief on her beautiful face. She didn’t have to fight anymore. She was finally free.  It’s been 3 1/2 years since she’s been gone but it feels just like yesterday. I feel her with me everyday, and I’ve found peace while spending time in the hills of southeastern Wyoming.

It’s amazing how life goes on after losing someone so special. Everyday feels like that dream you have when you just can’t run fast enough. You’re moving in slow-motion and you just want to give up.  And then someone comes along a year later to perk up your dad and breath new life into him and the family. A kind and loving woman named Debbie. She’s such a blessing.

I hope we all took time on Sunday to reflect on how important our mothers are to us whether they gave us life and whether they entered later in life. We should let them know our appreciation for them more than just on Mother’s Day.

Thank you Debbie.

Thank you Mom- miss you.

    Leah,

This was just beautiful. I know you miss your mom every day but she would be so excited about your new adventure. And how sweet of you to remember Debbie on Mother’s Day, too. You are a gem.

Awww, I love the Aunt Harriet pictures! Your mother really was an amazing lady, and I know she’d be so proud of who you have become. And I’m so, so, so happy that Skip found Debbie. I miss you muchly and can’t wait to see you again!

What an amazing story! We lost Mark’s mother to colon cancer almost 2 years ago, and it’s been a journey as well. Luckily, we were both there when she, too, took her last breath. I think that moment kind of solidified our relationship and brought us closer together than we had ever been before – we knew if we could get through that together, we could get through anything. And here we are almost a year after our wedding day! I am so happy to hear of the peace you’ve found in Wyoming, and I know your mother (like Mark’s) will live on in your memories and in your heart.

thanks for making me cry, you b&*%h!!!! i miss harriet all of the time. i guess i should have expected this now that that you are all “internet journal” these days. i can’t believe it has been that long since she left us in body. she will live forever in our hearts, because she was one of those people that got there and stayed!!! i know i will never forget harriet’s love OR pimento cheese!! ;0) i am glad that you are in a place to share her fight with the world wide web! a major acomplishment… miss you, too, lita.

p.s. i enjoyed our shoot as well, even though it doesn’t count as a REAL job, it was a great time at the Marriott Marquis, and thought we got some great stuff! thanks again.

Leah: I worked with your Dad at Lifetouch and talked to him today, asking about you and your cowboy sweetheart and he gave me you web address. He said he couldn’t fit in his Z-car wearing a 10-gallon hat!! Best wishes… John
